Hazrat Nabi Khan is the son of an experienced farmer from Chanchan Village in Khas Kunar District. Hazrat’s father passed away recently, leaving him to provide for a family of eight on his own. In an effort to help, the Kunar FSC owner extended credit to Hazrat for the purchase of cauliflower seeds. The high quality cauliflower seeds and technical advice enabled Hazrat to obtain a very high yield, much higher than the average in the area. Hazrat easily repaid the loan while making a moderate profit to help provide for his family’s needs.
Not only was the yield greater than expected, but Hazrat was able to further increase his profit by harvesting earlier in the season than normal and demanding a higher price at the market. Hazrat has used his profits to procure feed for his livestock, leading to greater milk production and further income. Other local farmers witnessed his success, and they also started purchasing their inputs and seeking advice from the Kunar FSC. The Kunar FSC has employed 25 people, provides product and services to over 3,300 households, and has realized over $1 million in sales since its creation in 2008.
